Seeking advice and counsel from mental health professionals or school guidance counselors can help victims heal from what happened.

To deal with extreme or persistent cases, adults may help with pursuing legal options to get the bullying to stop. Adults should be involved in issues like having revenge porn removed from a website or pressing charges with the police to remedy the crime of cyberharassment or distribution of sexual material containing minors. If one adult doesn’t respond in a way that seems normal or refuses to address the problem, feel free to bring the issue to another.

When someone attempts to inform a trusted party of a bad experience, it is important to mention the website where the problems began. That way, adults can easily figure out how to have website administrators ban, reprimand, or address the troll or cybermob at the site of the violation.

Users can even go directly to website administrators. Facebook, Instagram, and other sites allow users to report abuses. For Facebook, the link next to each post allows the user to review a dropdown menu of choices, which includes a choice called “Report.” This link will allow the user to describe the problem with the post, message, or link that makes the user feel threatened. Similarly, Instagram has options to report abuses anonymously. Those websites don’t share what users report with the person who posted the insulting or threatening comment. And, they often agree to cooperate with the authorities because they care about fostering a safe space for their users.

No matter what you decide to do, it will help to make a printout or screen grab of bullying messages or encounters with trolls or cybermobs. Trolls may delete their comments if they feel as if they might be caught. If you have a hard copy of the encounter, you can show it as proof that it happened. It would be especially useful as evidence to bring to school officials or police officers. If the screen does not show it, add the date and time that the messages were received. This can help adults look into the issue further.
